Townsville Water Quality Improvement Plan Implementation
Introduction
Many of the actions in the Black Ross (Townsville) WQIP are linked to existing water quality related programs and projects which are planned or already being undertaken by Townsville City Council (TCC) through Creek to Coral and the various TCC departments. Most of the actions involving the management of waterways and water quality involves Creek to Coral working with external partners and the Townsville community.
Some of the actions that are underway include:
- Incorporating the review of new and draft legislation into the Black Ross (Townsville) WQIP and associated planning and management initiatives;
- Draft State Planning Policy Healthy Waters submission to DERM;
- Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) review and preparation of the Townsville WSUD Business Case;
- Scoping of a total water cycle management plan (TWCMP) and urban stormwater management plan (USQMP) for Townsville;
- Input to the Louisa Creek Waterway Management Plan;
- Coordination of the Urban Stormwater Management Working Group – meeting number 2 to be held in Mackay in March 2010;
- Assisting with environmental management and sustainability input for the preparation of the new Townsville City Planning Scheme especially with regard to water quality, waterway and wetland management, WSUD guidelines and urban stormwater management;
- Preparation of funding submissions for WQIP implementation projects under the Australian Government’s Caring for Our Country Business Plan 2010-2011;
- Involvement in the Dry Tropics Watersmart program;
- Thematic Interpretation – preparing for Prof. Sam Ham’s visit in April 2010 to develop a water quality improvement communication program.
