Short Title: Nelly Bay Catchment

Nelly Bay Catchment Plan Review and Riparian Revegetation

Location: Gustav Creek and Nelly Bay catchment

Organisation:

Magnetic Island Residents and Ratepayers Association Inc.

Project Summary:

Gustav Creek is a key area on Magnetic Island requiring a catchment management approach to manmade issues do not adversely impact the natural values of waterways and associated habitat.

It is time to review the catchment management plan developed in association with the Gustav Creek community in 2004 to determine current priorities and refocus efforts. The lower Gustav Creek management plan also needs to be revised in light of the movement of sediment downstream and the ongoing issues associated with sand movement in Nelly Bay.

Gustav Creek Catchment Care:
The groups that formed the original Gustav Creek Catchment Care alliance to develop the catchment plan in 2004 were:
  • Magnetic Island Residents and Ratepayers Association Inc.(MIRRA);
  • Magnetic Island Community Development Association (MICDA);
  • Magnetic Island Nature Conservation Association (MINCA).
It is anticipated that these groups will be involved with the review of the catchment plan and the lower Gustav Creek management plan along with other relevant organisations such as Townsville City Council, Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).
